Student Life Comes Alive at APU Screen Spectrum Competition


Seven Media and Communication students brought the APU community together for the Screen Spectrum competition, where 17 exceptional student-made videos were showcased and evaluated by experts. Laughter and heart-warming moments filled the event, offering a glimpse into the APU student experience. Highlighting the evening’s achievements further, the official Instagram page for APU SoMM Live was also launched.

The enthusiasm crackled like live wires over Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation’s (APU) campus as the Screen Spectrum: Student Video Challenge concluded.

Seven enthusiastic students from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Media and Communication Studies programme: Bibi Zaynab Rujid, Muhammad Hanif Firdaus, Grace Maree Krause, Saber Saleh Naji Saad Wasel, Ng Ai Ni, Zhou Zihan, and Fatsah Saaoui, inspired by their Lecturer, Ms. Rahilah Ahmad, poured their hearts into organising this competition.

What was their goal? To capture the essence of APU life through a camera lens, this dedicated crew worked seamlessly to bring Screen Spectrum to life, resulting in a great event that honoured student talent and showcased the vibrant spirit of APU’s campus life.

Sifting through the entries provided insights into the life and soul of APU in the eyes of a student. Choosing the finalists was not an easy task. After careful consideration, 17 incredible videos emerged, ready to compete in the grand finals at Auditorium 3.

As the shortlisted videos flickered on the large screen, the audience was transported on a thrilling journey.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Laughter erupted at amusing depictions of study difficulties, while heart-warming moments brought tears to eyes.

Each entry resonated with the audience, creating a strong sense of shared experience and togetherness.

The videos delivered a realistic portrait of what it genuinely means to be an APU student, from the challenges of late-night cram sessions to the joys of making lifetime friends.

To keep the audience entertained, the Rentak Tari performing group performed a dance show and Milan Kizhakkethil Manoj sang a song.

The esteemed judges from the School of Media, Arts, and Design (SoMAD) included Mr. Edwin Pio Rufus Samiraj, Academic Leader, and Mr. Chua Soo Han, a renowned lecturer with a keen eye for storytelling.

With their expertise in filmmaking and narrative, they meticulously evaluated each video. Originality, captivating narration, and that elusive spark, the ability to truly capture the essence of APU life were all on the judging checklist.

Beyond Screen Spectrum – Creativity & Community

Syasya Yasmin Syahril emerged as the champion followed by Chan Wan Xuan in second place, Eleanor Permata Fry and Rashed Abdul Rahman Abdul Jalil Ahmed in third place.

Screen Spectrum was not just about winning. It was a vibrant celebration of the APU community and camaraderie amongst all, as well as a platform for students to showcase their talent beyond the confines of classrooms.


The winners had the opportunity to snap photos with the judges and Academic Leaders.

The evening also saw the much-anticipated launch of the official Instagram page for SoMM Live, a new space for students and faculty to connect, share ideas, and celebrate the achievements of the School of Marketing and Management.

Screen Spectrum served as a strong reminder of the great ability and creativity that exists among APU students.

It was more than simply a competition; it was a dynamic artwork created with fun, inspiration, and a deep appreciation for the unique stories that shape life at APU.

The gathering fostered a sense of community and belonging, reminding everyone that the uniqueness of APU lies in its students.
