ASIA'S 1ST XR (META) STUDIO INFUSED WITH A BUILT-IN MIXED AND EXTENDED REALITY INFRASTRUCTURE

The APU XR Studio is a first-of-its-kind facility that comprises technologies capable of developing Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) applications. Developed in partnership with Ministry XR Malaysia, the studio is equipped with a Volumetric Video Capture Station, EDEX Station and Mixed Reality Smart Glasses in the form of Microsoft HoloLens.

Being the first XR Studio among Malaysian Universities, the XR Studio aims to provide students of the Computer Games DevelopmentMultimedia TechnologyEngineeringAnimation & Visual Effects programmes with hands-on experience while developing projects & assignments revolving around these technologies.

On 21st January 2019, the Malaysian VRAR Malaysia Chapter was launched at APU. This also made APU the host to the chapter allowing for its global network to share accelerating growth, connections and knowledge within the VR/AR industry.

VR/AR ASSOCIATION (VRARA)

The VR/AR Association (VRARA) is an international organization designed to foster collaboration between solution providers and end-users that accelerates growth, fosters research and education, helps develop industry best practices, connects member organizations and promotes the services of member companies/institutions. APU has been a member of VRARA since 2018 and was the host of the Malaysian Chapter (2018-2020). With the establishment of the XR Studio in 2020, APU has embarked on various industry-academia developments in the areas of immersive technology or extended reality (XR) technology where outcomes leading to artificial digital worlds that emulate the physical world have surfaced. With tools like the Microsoft Hololens 2, staff and student users can detach their senses of sound, sight, and space from the known world, and fully “immerse” themselves within simulated realities generated by computers within a spatial computing environment. VRARA has benefited APU as it allows for a gateway into VR/AR eco-system and community as part of the University Partner Program where there is an outreach to 4500 organizations plus 60000 professionals in the same discipline. APU is given access to global events, activities, research and instructor led trainings. The partnership with VRARA has now given APU the foundation to move on to newer frontiers of Metaverse.
