Immersive Industrial Visit to Sensata Technologies

Unveiling Semiconductor Manufacturing, Automotive Sensors, and Automation

On August 20, 2024, 38 students from the School of Engineering (SoE) at the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) embarked on an enlightening industrial visit to Sensata Technologies, a global leader in industrial technology known for its wide array of sensors, electrical protection components, and sensor-integrated solutions.

Led by Ir Ts Dr Reena Sri Selvarajan, a lecturer from the School of Engineering, the students gained valuable insights into semiconductor manufacturing, automotive sensors, and automation technology during the half-day programme.

The visit commenced with an introduction by Mr Akmalrizwan, General Manager of Sensata Technologies, followed by an informative session led by Mr Shahrul, the company's automation leader. Students had the unique opportunity to tour Sensata’s cutting-edge cleanroom facility, which specialises in manufacturing sensors for continental automobiles.

Kiew Zheng Wei, a Year-2 Mechatronics Engineering student, reflected on the experience: “This visit gave me a comprehensive view of how car sensors are produced, from PCB manufacturing and chip calibration to wire bonding, housing, curing, and final labelling. Witnessing the entire process firsthand was eye-opening, and seeing how Sensata has integrated robotic arms to enhance production efficiency was particularly impressive.”

He added, “I was fortunate to have personal discussions with senior engineers and workers who have been in the field for years. Their insights were incredibly motivating, and I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. I look forward to applying what I’ve learned and pursuing a successful engineering career.”

Sharing his enthusiasm, Year-3 Computer Engineering student Durkesh Ravi Shankar said, “The experience was nothing short of inspiring! What made it even more special was sharing the moment with friends as we explored the complexities of MSG sensor manufacturing and testing processes. The precision, innovation, and dedication involved in producing these advanced technologies were truly fascinating. It deepened my appreciation for the critical role these small devices play across various industries.”

The visit concluded with a roundtable discussion that not only encouraged valuable collaboration but also opened doors to exciting internship opportunities for APU students.

In the words of Dr Reena, “This visit significantly enhanced our students’ understanding of industry practices and career prospects. It has inspired them to envision their future in this dynamic field. We aim to continue connecting students with leading industry players to further enrich their learning experiences and support their professional growth.”
