Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) came alive with vibrant cultural displays and heartfelt performances as the Indonesian Student Community hosted a grand celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day on 29th November 2024.
The event centered around the theme “The Eastern Odyssey” and brought attention to the unique cultural heritage of Papua, one of Indonesia’s easternmost islands.
Each year, the Independence Day celebration adopts a new theme, spotlighting a specific Indonesian region to educate and inspire.
On top of that, a special highlight of the celebration was the symbolic inclusion of the Cendrawasih bird, often called the “Bird of Paradise.”
This year, the bird was chosen as the event mascot to underscore the theme “The Eastern Odyssey,” emphasising the interconnectedness of nature and culture in Eastern Indonesia.

The event kicked off with a captivating theatrical performance of Tanjung Menangis, a legendary tale steeped in Eastern Indonesian folklore, leaving the audience in awe of Indonesia’s rich storytelling heritage.
The fashion show was a dazzling display of Indonesia’s diverse regional styles, as models in traditional attire paraded the stage, showcasing the cultural significance and artistic ingenuity of the region.
Next, they played traditional Indonesian games, bringing a lively and interactive energy, fostering camaraderie while celebrating the joy and heritage of the culturally significant pastimes.
Furthermore, Eastern Indonesia’s vibrant heritage came alive through mesmerising dances and songs, as dancers showcased traditional movements to rhythmic music, embodying the deep connection between culture and Papua’s natural beauty.
A Heartfelt Closing
As the event came to a close, the spirit of Indonesia resonated throughout APU, leaving an indelible mark of unity, pride, and cultural appreciation.
The audience departed with a renewed admiration for the diversity of Indonesia and a deeper connection to the traditions of Papua.
