APU Students Strengthen Character and Community through Wildlife Conservation at Zoo Negara

17 Dec 2025, 10:15 am

On 1 November, a dedicated team of student volunteers from the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) joined zookeepers at the National Zoo of Malaysia (Zoo Negara) as part of the long-running “Keeperku” programme.

This initiative is one of APU’s longest-standing volunteer efforts, reflecting an enduring commitment to wildlife conservation and community engagement.

A Tradition of Conservation since 2017

APU students have actively volunteered at Zoo Negara since 2017, gaining valuable exposure to animal welfare, conservation practices, and the operational demands of a national zoo.

These sessions offer students hands-on learning opportunities—ranging from animal care to behind-the-scenes support—that deepen their understanding of biodiversity protection, aligning strongly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 15: Life on Land, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

Learning through Service and Empathy

Beyond routine duties, APU volunteers contribute to Zoo Negara’s education and conservation activities, enabling interactive learning experiences for visitors while ensuring that animal care remains central.

These real-world responsibilities help students cultivate empathy, resilience, and practical problem-solving skills.

As Lin Howen, a Year 2 Cybersecurity student, shared, “I’m really grateful I participated in this programme as I learned so much about caring for exotic animals and gained a deeper appreciation for the immense effort that goes into maintaining our zoos.”

Such experiences demonstrate the importance of stepping outside the classroom to engage meaningfully with the community.

Continuing a Legacy of Service

APU students planned to return to Zoo Negara on 12 December 2025 for another educational programme supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This ongoing involvement underscores APU’s commitment to nurturing graduates who are not only academically competent but also socially responsible and community-minded.

Building Character for a Sustainable Future

Through consistent volunteerism, students develop essential life skills—teamwork, patience, and compassion—while contributing to conservation efforts that benefit both animals and the public. These engagements shape well-rounded individuals who recognise that small, sustained actions can create long-term positive change.

Ultimately, APU’s partnership with Zoo Negara exemplifies experiential learning at its best. By participating in meaningful social welfare initiatives, students strengthen their character, broaden their worldview, and play an active role in advancing a more sustainable and compassionate society.
