On 26th August 2026, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation’s (APU) School of Global Hospitality & Tourism (SoGHT) hosted ‘Behind the Lens with Karthik Shaamalan’ — an engaging industry-sharing session that offered students a compelling insider looks into the local creative sector and the vibrant Malaysian Tamil film industry.
The event featured prominent Malaysian film director Mr Karthik Shaamalan, who was joined by lead cast members from his acclaimed film Poovelam Kettupar, Mr Yuvaraj Krishnasamy and Ms Veronica Thomas.
Together, the panel provided students with a rare glimpse into the realities, challenges, and evolving opportunities within local filmmaking.
Designed as a student-led initiative, the event served as a practical learning laboratory for SoGHT Event Management students.
Under the mentorship of SoGHT Lecturers Ms Varalakshmi Sugumar and Dr Munieleswar Raju, the student organizing committee took full charge of planning, coordinating, guest management, and operational execution.
This hands-on experience enabled the organisers to move beyond theoretical models, sharpening essential industry competencies in communication, time management, crisis resolution, and team synergy.

During the main interactive session, Director Karthik Shaamalan shared candid reflections on his personal trajectory in cinema, shedding light on the dedication, resilience, and collaborative effort required behind the camera to bring a story to life.
The discussion was further enriched by insights from cast members Yuvaraj Krishnasamy and Veronica Thomas, who offered distinct perspectives on acting, character development, and cast dynamics.
Together, the guest speakers urged students to look beyond the glamour of the silver screen and appreciate the immense commitment, creative discipline, and teamwork driving the Malaysian creative economy.
A central takeaway from Director Karthik’s address was the crucial role of education in safeguarding one’s future.
He urged students to view their academic qualifications not merely as a degree, but as an essential security foundation that provides stability while navigating the unpredictable terrain of creative and professional pursuits.
He emphasised that ambition and education are mutually reinforcing; by building a solid academic and technical skill set, aspiring professionals can pursue their passions with greater resilience, confidence, and agility.
By combining real-world event execution with inspiring career perspectives, the initiative left students empowered to pursue their aspirations with a renewed appreciation for their educational journey.
