Organised by Sustainability Future Fusion (SFF), in collaboration with the School of Business (SoB) at APU, under the guidance of Ms Cynthia Mala Paul Dorairaj (Lecturer and Advisor of SFF, SoB at APU), the initiative aimed to provide comfort, encouragement, and moments of joy to 50 children undergoing cancer treatment, recognising the emotional and physical challenges faced by both the children and their families during this difficult journey, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 3, 4, and 17 (SDG 3, SDG 4, and SDG 17).

Alongside supporting the initiative was Khoo Lay Yang, President of SFF, who actively supported student coordination and on-ground engagement throughout the outreach.

Together in Care and Compassion

During the visit, a contribution of thoughtfully curated goodie bags were given, containing colouring books, stationery, and puzzles; items chosen to offer both comfort and creative engagement during the children’s hospital stay.

Additionally, distribution of essential vitamins was made to support the children’s overall well-being, reinforcing the importance of holistic care within a healthcare environment.

Adding a festive and uplifting touch, a Santa Claus and teddy bear mascot helped create a cheerful and comforting atmosphere in the ward, bringing smiles and moments of joy to the children.

A meaningful Impact through collective Compassion

Ms Cynthia shared that the outreach stood as a meaningful reminder of the power of empathy, community solidarity, and partnership in bringing comfort to those facing difficult circumstances.

“For the children, the visit created moments of happiness, reassurance, and warmth that offered encouragement during their treatment journey, while for the students and volunteers involved, the experience provided a meaningful opportunity to engage in purposeful service, nurturing compassion, social responsibility, and a deeper appreciation of community care.”

Also sharing her reflections, Ms Sheila Rock, the driving force behind the Hug Me Project, expressed how deeply moved she was to see the children filled with joy and positivity throughout the visit.

“This outreach reflects what can be achieved when communities come together with care, empathy, and a shared desire to support children in need, reminding us that collective compassion can bring comfort, strength, and hope during even the most challenging times.”
